I formed Wine by Rx to pursue my love of wine and to meet people interested in wine and fine food.
The concept is simple: to create "bespoke" wine tastings custom-tailored for a person or a group's particular tastes. I made my first foray into the fascinating world of wine more than a decade ago, as a doctoral student at Cambridge University. There, in quintessentially European setting, wine became an integral part of my life, bringing together friends and family in a shared experience. As an officer in the Cambridge University Wine Society, I was privileged to organize wine tasting dinners for Paul Pontallier of Château Margaux, Baron Eric de Rothschild of Château Lafite, and Barone Francesco Ricasoli of Castello di Brolio. I also hosted weekly tastings featuring wine producers including Château Gazin, Masi, Castello di Fonterutoli, Planeta, Château Gruaud-Larose, Château Climens, Quinta do Noval, Ravenswood, CUNE, Faiveley, von Kesselstatt, Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger, and Casa Lapostolle. During these events, I found that my background in chemistry gave me a unique perspective on the molecular basis of aromas and food pairings, which lent itself to wine tasting. Today, after completing my Ph.D. at Cambridge and earning my M.D. from Columbia University, I am a practicing clinical cardiologist. For me, tasting wine and practicing medicine have a lot in common. Explaining the characteristics of a wine to someone and helping them to recognize the nuances of a great bottle is similar in many ways to explaining complex medical information. In cardiology and in wine-tasting, distilling information and sharing it in an understandable way are the most satisfying parts of my job.
