Autumn is in full swing, and with crisper air and harvest menus more common, my mind inevitably wanders to wines suited to cooler temperatures. The Northern Rhône, Tuscany, Piedmont, and Rioja are a few of the regions that make wines perfectly suited to the season; from heartier soups to game and truffles, these wines never disappoint.
The 2010 Chianti Classico from Borgo Scopeto is a great everyday drinking wine for this time of year. Made from 90% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino, and 5% Merlot, the wine is aged for 1 year in large Slavonian casks prior to bottling. It is a dark ruby with an intense, somewhat rustic nose smelling of dark cherry, violets, anise, and leather. The palate has a generous amount of dark red fruit; but, this is framed by a good amount of acid and noticeable tannins, giving the wine a racy, taught, and slightly rustic edge. It definitely improved in the glass, and would be a great pairing with any truffle, mushroom, or game dish. Oh, and at about $15 a bottle, it is a fantastic value!
