The first installment of Wine of the Week highlights a classic style of wine: White Burgundy. Burgundy is a wine producing region in France, running north to south beginning near Dijon. It is the spiritual home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Despite the complex geography and myriad of sub-regions in Burgundy, white wines from this region are almost always Chardonnay. These wines, when well-made, |
can hit the pinnacle of elegance, complexity, and longevity for Chardonnay - they are truly amazing. The drawback, however, is price. Good Burgundy does not come cheaply.
Maison Verget was founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens and makes wine from many excellent sub-regions of Burgundy, such as Chablis and the Côte d’Or. The Mâconnais is a region in the southern part of Burgundy, which often produces easy-drinking versions of Chardonnay, traditionally without the depth or complexity of its counterpart wines from the north. Verget’s Mâcon-Villages Terres de Pierres demonstrates what excellent fruit selection and winemaking technique can produce from the Mâcon: a beautifully drinking White Burgundy at an affordable price.
The 2010 Terres de Pierres was vinified in 30% used oak and 70% stainless steel. It has a wonderful core of citrus and mineral aromas, as well as green apple, pear, and subtle nutty aromas. The texture and structure are characteristic of Chardonnay from Burgundy. There is firm structure and acid with chalky limestone notes that are all well-integrated with the fruit aromas. Overall a fantastic value in White Burgundy and a great wine to enjoy!
