There is something inherently satisfying about drinking a wine that I have cellared. Being able to enjoy a bottle after it has attained a certain amount of maturity, shed its young fruit, integrated its tannins, and developed secondary and tertiary aromas is one of the most interesting aspects of tasting wine. The Villadoria Barbaresco Riserva 2001 was a great experience to drink. It was a garnet red color, with elegant aromas of rose petals, dried preserved cherries, tar, and violets, finishing off with subtle notes of earth and truffles. The wine really showed a beautiful tannin structure, that "grip" which was so characteristic of the 2001 vintage. Some things truly do get better with time and patience.
